My Guide to Betting on Horse Racing

SA Horse Racing Tips Betting GuideHorse betting is a great way to spend some money and have some fun. However, you need to know the rules of placing different types of bets before you head to the track on race day or head online.  I hope to give you a beginner’s guide to betting on horse racing. You will learn what various bets mean, how to win them, odds, and more. Start out with simple bets, then move to more complicated ones as you better get a grip on odds, betting practices, etc.

Betting to Win

This is probably the most self-explanatory way to bet. Here, you simply choose the horse that you think will win the race. The odds that your horse is given to win the race are the odds that you get for placing your bet.

Each Way

Here, you bet for a horse to win, as well as place. If you win, you win both bets at the same time. You can win your bet for your horse to place if your horse does not win. What places actually pay out are dependent upon the number of horses in the race. Whereas races with 16 or more runners will pay out for the first 4 spots, 2 to 4 runners will only pay out for winners.

Lucky 15

The lucky 15 bet is a neat bet to try once you have some experience. In this bet, you pick the winners of four different races. You must pick 3 of 4 winners, here, to make any profit. But if you can pick all four winners, you can seriously make a lot of cash, quick. There are often bonuses for those who can pick out all 4 winners correctly.

Tricasts/Reverse Tricasts

Tricasts are pretty simple and fun to play with, too. In a regular tricast, you correctly chose what horses will come in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for a race. Again, this is risky but you can make a lot of money at it. In a reverse tricast you choose the same thing, but the horses do not have to be in the order you placed them in.

Doubles (or Trebles)

This is where you place a bet on a horse to win more than one race. There are also nicknames for the number of races you bet on the horse in. The most popular are Trixie (3), Yankee (4), and Canadian (5). You only need 2 of these to win to make a profit.

There a lots more complicated types of bets that can yield amazing returns – if you win!  However, I hope that this guide goes somewhere to helping you understand the very basics of betting on horse racing.
